The uncommon and unusual Cloven-feathered Dove (Drepanoptila holosericea) is native to New Caledonia in the South Pacific. The silky feathers and mild iridescence of this dove make it stand out. Their somewhat split tail feather tips give the bird a “cloven” appearance, hence its name. Birdwatchers and ornithologists are drawn to the Cloven-feathered Dove due to its size and morphological traits.
This New Caledonian dove forages typically fruits, seeds, and berries in deep woodlands. It disperses seeds in its ecology since it is mostly frugivorous.
The Cloven-feathered Dove is quiet and elusive, hiding in the woodland canopy. This, together with its limited range, makes this bird rare, adding to its mystique.
